Other Work History:
- 2011-2013: Youth Consumer Advisor/Project Co-ordinator: I held a strategic role coordinating an innovative project, working at the forefront of Positive Youth Development practices in New Zealand. I engaged with a diverse group of young people to set up a new youth-run, youth-led initiative to support young people’s mental health and well-being in Auckland. Working to create positive changes within the mental health sector for the young people of Auckland. This involved project and event management, youth work, community engagement, resource design, and awesomeness.
- 2012: Affinity Services Rainbow Champion: In this part-time role I assisted in the development of a new project within Affinity Services. I was tasked with working alongside the service improvement and frontline staff ensuring that the organisation met the most recent best practice guidelines for Rainbow communities. This role included auditing, excellent communication, education, and strategic visioning.
- 2010 – 2011: OUTline NZ Administrative Assistant: I was responsible for manning the national community helpline, developing the weekly national OUTLine newsletter, and completing administrative tasks. I developed WTF, a national fundraising and awareness campaign for OUTLine and Rainbow Youth. I was one of the frontline employees for OUTline, and thus the first port of call of new service users.
- 2009 – 2010: Youth Related Community Programs in the Otago region Between 2009 and 2010 I was employed in a number of public and community funded part-time roles. These mainly focused on designing and implementing health and relationship education resources and programmes for young people. In these roles I was required to coordinate and mentor a team of volunteers, and to deliver these programmes to young people. This work was self-driven, as I was solely responsible for much of the programme, and also required significant team-work and management skills as I often worked with a team of volunteers and young people. I worked with a diverse range of young people in Dunedin, on youth-led initiatives aimed at building resilience, educating and empowering young people in our community. I always strove to ensure that the young people were heard and valued, receiving the best youth work service that I could provide.
- 2008 – Media, Film and Communication Tutor: University of Otago I tutored Fime 303: Globalisation, Politics and the Media, in which I was responsible for delivering the tutorials, and for marking both written assignments and group presentations. This position required excellent communication skills, and the ability to work with a variety of students to delve deeper into the content of the course.
Testimonials:
“Sam Orchard is one of those rare people who renews your faith in humanity. He’s generous with his time, effusive with his enthusiasm, talented, creative, and completely unpretentious. His comics are political without being overly didactic, and his work with LGBT communities and at-risk youth is inspirational, to say the least.” - Alexandra Franzen, Entrepreneur and Queer Activist.
“I have known Sam Orchard for three years. The level of creativity and unique ideas that Sam develops in his comic art constantly impresses me. Sam always manages to communicate complex ideas in a highly readable and engaging manner. I use Sam’s comics in my university level teaching as a means to communicate ideas about gender, theory and politics.” - Louise Pearman, Phd Candidate.
“Sam has designed materials for my predecessor, which we continue to print off because of their popularity. He also contributed to a special issue of The Critic this year that I was involved with, his work was well received by students that I work with here at the Student Support Centre.”- James Burford, Otago University Student Support Centre Queer Support Coordinator.
