So this is my little pride comic, featuring my dear pal George, who’s been in previous comics about hiking, hospitals, and reading (to name a few).The comic references the Green party conversion therapy petition and the rainbow stairs at Freyburg place. I was up in Auckland for the Same Same but Different writers fest – and I have to say, it was such a beautiful and amazing festival, and I’m so pleased about how it went. I’m not so pleased with media, and other folks, deciding that the petition was only about gay conversion therapy, or folks in the community reckoning that there’s some sneaky trans agenda going on. That, well, that’s just disappointing.
I’m super pleased that the rainbow steps included a reference to the newer rainbow flag, but… it did really feel like one of those things that symbolically revealed some stark reminders of hierarchy within our community (even if it was unintentional).
